2005 sees the fortieth anniversary of G & G Food Supplies Ltd, the Sussex based nutritional supplement manufacturer and distributor. Formed in 1965 the company started trading from the home of David Gaiman and his wife Sheila, a qualified pharmacist. Sheila Gaiman, initially a pharmacist at London’s University College Hospital, decided at a very early stage in her career that natural solutions to health problems were preferable to most drugs. She and David started supplying Vitamin E to UK and European mail order customers. At the time this vitamin was in short supply and trade soon grew. By the early 1970’s the company had taken over a shop in East Grinstead High Street where it combined retail sales with a burgeoning mail order business. The company had now expanded its activities to include most major nutritional supplements. The world of health and natural medicine was expanding rapidly at this point and the company started to collate research and nutritional information from sources across the globe. This led to a growth in practitioner customers and soon the business moved again to larger store premises in East Grinstead. The company’s insistence on the highest quality standards gradually evolved to the purchase of a 10,000 square foot manufacturing facility on the outskirts of the town. From here G & G commenced their own manufacturing and developed the Trufil™ capsule, a process which meant absolutely no fillers or excipents were added to any formula. This sparked third party demand for the company’s manufacturing facilities and production soon rose to 1,500,000 capsules a week! Steady growth necessitated a further move and in 1997 a 31,000 square foot facility was purchased. Amongst further advancements in the company’s manufacturing procedures here was the establishment of a pharmaceutical standard ‘ clean room’. Today the company produces 3,000,000 capsules a week and recently celebrated the manufacture of its 3 billionth capsule!! G & G has been pro-active in the battle against the impending EEC legislation and continues to support efforts to repeal the directives from Brussels. “ There are two locations that really advance the cause of health and nutrition,” says chairman David Gaiman, “ the UK and California. People should realise that this is an industry which makes a huge contribution to the UK economy as well as the health and welfare of the nation. This same industry, which is independent from the global drug and aggrochemical industries, is under threat. If the public and our representatives at Westminster and Brussels do not act then it will go the way of the high quality, small volume British auto industry, which was decimated by governments in the 1970’s.” Despite this Gaiman remains upbeat about the company’s future, “ This company is going to continue the mission of high quality, cutting edge production through the 21 st century. We’ve never wanted to be the biggest…our mission is to set a standard of quality, integrity and independence for others to emulate. The company will continue and it’s our intention that each generation of directors and executives revitalises the company while maintaining our purpose.” With clients now spanning every continent plus an ongoing reputation for reliability and pure ingredients, the next 40 years look rosy for G & G.
